Bill Stone, CFA, CMT
Bill Stone is the chief investment officer and president of Stone Investment Partners LLC, an investment consulting firm serving both individual and institutional investors. He applies his expertise in designing multi-asset class portfolios using active, passive and factor (smart beta) investing to help clients reach their objectives while being cognizant of both cost and risk.
Bill served as chief investment officer and a member of the executive management team for Avalon Advisors, LLC managing a $9 billion assets under management (AUM) independent registered investment advisor (RIA) firm on a day-to-day basis while growing AUM by 21% during his tenure. Under his leadership, the advisory capabilities were significantly expanded to include wealth advisory, financial planning and an investment strategy team. He established a state-of-the-art open architecture investment platform utilizing external separately managed account (SMA) model delivery, exchange traded funds (ETFs) and mutual funds to complement the internally managed investment strategies. He established and chaired a robust manager selection and due diligence process along with enhanced risk management. Bill was the portfolio manager for the top performing Avalon Liquid Alternatives strategy and the Avalon Smart Beta strategy. In addition, he started a new alternative investment platform, Avalon Investment Partners, with significant improvements for accessing illiquid alternative investments.
Prior to founding Stone Investment Partners, he served as PNC Asset Management Group's global chief investment strategist. Bill led a team of analysts who analyzed the factors influencing the direction of global economies and financial markets. With over $140 billion in AUM, he served as a primary driver of asset allocation and portfolio construction for both high net worth individual, family office and institutional investors.
Before joining PNC, he was chief investment officer at First Western Trust. He started his career on Wall Street as a financial analyst with Salomon Brothers.
He is a popular public speaker and has presented at numerous U.S. and international conferences. He has often appeared on U.S. and international TV and radio as well as in print media to share his keen insights into the global financial markets. His expertise has been featured on ABC, Bloomberg, Bloomberg Asia, CNBC, CNBC Asia, Fox Business, and NHK World. He has been quoted extensively in the financial press, including The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Bloomberg News, Barron’s, USA Today, and The New York Times.
